Broker Your Own Success in 3 Easy Steps

Don’t let shock and awe strategies leave you blind to your prospective broker’s flaws. By doing a little extra homework during your selection process, you’ll get the clear picture of your potential broker from the start. Veteran broker and contract law expert Kevin McClure knows the role a good broker can play in a new agent’s career. “Ultimately, success is up to you, but the right broker can help get you there faster.” To sign with the right broker the first time, follow McClure’s 3 steps to choosing the right broker.

Go for comfort. For new agents, commission structure or brand recognition is typically the first thing on their mind. It may seem basic, but McClure suggests, focusing on the relationship with the broker, instead. A great relationship with your broker will help you establish a more productive,  and, more successful career from the onset. “You want someone who’s available to help you learn the industry, to answer your calls,” he says. “Do you personally like and respect the managing broker? If you don’t, don’t kid yourself into thinking that you’ll be able to work with him or her.”

Ask the right questions. As a new agent, knowing the right questions to ask your prospective broker is key to finding the right broker. McClure suggests including the following questions in the interview process. (For a more in-depth list of questions go to www.azpowerhouse.com )

What’s the turnover rate among associates especially experienced ones?

How will the company help me generate business?

What is your training program for new salespeople?

What’s the culture of the office? Friendly and low-key? Very aggressive and motivated?

How many salespeople do you train annually? How many are still with the company a year later?

Test your prospective broker by assigning him or her a task. “Some brokers will say anything to hire you,” McClure warns. Weed out the sincere from not by asking your potential broker to do something for you. “When talking to the broker say, ‘I love what you’re saying. Would you mind following up with me at 10 a.m. tomorrow?’”
